Dire Dawa University

History

• Location: Dire Dawa University is situated in the industrial city of Dire Dawa, approximately 515 km east of Addis Ababa.
• Establishment: Founded in the 2007 academic year, the university was created to expand higher education access across Ethiopia, aiming to produce skilled human resources and research for national development.
• Initial Enrollment: The university began operations with 754 regular students in three faculties:
• Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics
• Faculty of Social Science and Language
• Faculty of Business and Economics
• Early Growth: In 2008, the university merged with the satellite campus of Haramaya University, enhancing its facilities and resources.

Current Status

• Academic Structure: Currently, Dire Dawa University comprises one institute (Institute of Technology) and five colleges
• Programs Offered: The university offers 47 undergraduate and 46 graduate programs, with total enrollment exceeding 21,159 students through various admission modalities.
• Staffing: The university employs 1,296 academic staff, of which 794 are active, and 21 are expatriates. Among them, 27% hold first degrees, 66% hold second degrees, and 5% have PhDs or higher. Additionally, there are 1,670 administrative staff and 107 technical and ICT staff.
• Focus on Technology: The Institute of Technology aims to support Ethiopia's transition to an industry-led economy, contributing to a national policy prioritizing engineering and natural sciences.
