About German Embassy School Addis Ababa

The Deutsche Botschaftsschule Addis Abeba (DBSAA), also known as the German Embassy School Addis Ababa (GESA), was established in 1958. Initially serving the children of German diplomats and expatriates, the school has since broadened its enrollment to include students from various nationalities and backgrounds.

The Early Roots (1906-1950s)

The first German school opened in 1906 during Emperor Menelik II's reign, serving expatriate families. This pioneering institution temporarily closed during the World Wars but laid important foundations.

Modern Foundation (1958-Present)

The current Deutsche Botschaftsschule Addis Abeba (DBSAA) - also called German Embassy School Addis Ababa (GESA) - was formally established in 1958. Originally serving German diplomats' children, it:

  • Evolved into a bilingual hub welcoming students of all nationalities

Structure of German Embassy School Addis Ababa

German Embassy School offers a comprehensive educational structure that includes:

  • Kindergarten
  • Ages of 1-6 years.
  • The children are organized into groups of 16-20 students
  • Primary School
  • Grades 1-4
  • With around 105 students in small classes of 15.
  • Secondary School
  • Grades 5-10,
  • With around 100 students across small classes of 12-15
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • This programme is an academically challenging two-year pre-university curriculum leading to an internationally recognized diploma. IBDP students undertake college-level course work, in-depth research, and community service modeled on university studies.
