1968: Establishment

St. Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College is established in 1968 through a historic collaboration between Emperor Haile Selassie I and the German Evangelical Church, St. Paul’s Hospital began as a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s healthcare system. Initially serving as a tertiary referral center, it provided critical services in general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics, addressing the nation’s most pressing medical needs.

2008: Transformation To Medical College

Recognizing Ethiopia’s acute physician shortage, the Federal Ministry of Health redefined the institution’s role, transitioning it into a premier academic medical center. In 2008, St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) was formally launched, becoming one of Ethiopia’s few institutions to seamlessly integrate medical education, research, and advanced clinical care.

2010s: Era of Specialization

• 2012: Launched Ethiopia's first nephrology fellowship program
• 2015: Inaugurated East Africa's most advanced burn treatment center
• 2018: Performed nation's first successful kidney transplant
