History & About Ambo University
History
- Location: Ambo University is situated in Ambo, the capital of West Shewa Zone in Oromia Regional State, about 114 km west of Addis Ababa.
- Foundation: Established in 1939 EC (1946), it is one of Ethiopia's oldest higher learning institutions. Initially, it started as a basic education school in 1924 EC (1931) and evolved through various phases.
- Disruption: Education was interrupted during the Italian invasion (1928-1933 EC), with schools closed and used for administrative purposes.
- Agricultural Focus: In 1939 EC, it became the first agricultural school in Ethiopia, offering courses in Animal Science, Crop Production, and Agricultural Engineering.
- Evolution: The institution transitioned to Ambo Agriculture and Forestry Secondary School in 1951 EC, later becoming Ambo Institute of Agriculture in 1967 EC, and then Ambo Junior College of Agriculture in 1974 EC.
- University Status: It was promoted to an autonomous University College in 2008 and officially became Ambo University in 2009.

- Academic Programs: Ambo University currently offers 51 graduate and 85 undergraduate programs across nine colleges, institutes, and schools, with 82 academic departments.
- Campuses: Besides the main campus in Ambo, the university has additional campuses in Awaro, Guder, and Woliso.
