Debre Markos University

History

• Establishment: Debre Markos University (DMU) was officially established by the Council of Ministers Regulation No. 227/2011 to support Ethiopia's Growth and Transformation agenda.
• Location: Situated in Debre Markos town, about 299 km northwest of Addis Ababa and 265 km southeast of Bahir Dar, the university covers an area of 100 hectares.
• Foundation: The foundation stone was laid in January 2005, and the university was inaugurated on November 18, 2007.
• First Enrollment: The university began operations in February 2007, admitting 760 students in its Education Faculty, supported by 53 academic staff, 34 permanent staff, and 21 contract workers.

Current Status

• Academic Structure: The university comprises six colleges, three institutes, and two schools across three campuses.
• Research and Community Service: It focuses on comprehensive thematic areas for research and community engagement, leveraging the region's rich socio-economic and cultural resources for academic exploration and development.
