History & About University of Gonder
Establishment and Early Years
- Initial Foundation (1954 G.C (1947 E.C.)): The University of Gondar was originally established as the Public Health College and Training Centre (PHC & TC), now known as the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. It is recognized as the oldest medical training institution in Ethiopia.
- Purpose: The establishment aimed to address significant health challenges in the 1940s and early 1950s by training middle-level health personnel using a community-based teaching approach.
- Management: Until 1960, the Ministry of Health operated the College.
Transition to University Status
- Integration with Haileselassie I University (1961): The College became part of Haileselassie I University (now Addis Ababa University) through an internal decree.
- Medical Faculty Establishment (1978): A bilateral agreement between Karl Marx University of Germany and Addis Ababa University led to the establishment of a medical faculty at the Gondar College, marking a significant transformation in medical education.
- Renaming (1988): The institution was renamed Gondar College of Medical Sciences, with initial training provided by German medical experts.
Autonomy and Expansion
- Autonomy (1992): Gondar College of Medical Sciences detached from Addis Ababa University and gained autonomy.
- New Faculty Openings:In 2001, the Faculty of Management Sciences and Economics (now the College of Business and Economics) was established.
- In 2003, the College was renamed Gondar University College, with the addition of two new faculties: the Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences (now the Faculty of Natural and Computational Sciences) and the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Humanities (now the College of Social Sciences and the Humanities).
- Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of Law (now the School of Law) were opened in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
- In 2009, the Faculty of Agriculture, along with the School of Technology and the School of Education, was established, with student enrollment beginning in September 2010.

The College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Gondar was founded in 1954 as a Public Health College and has been dedicated to medical education and research for over four decades. The University of Gondar currently has four functioning campuses and one under construction:
- Maraki
- Atse Tewodros
- Atse Fasil
- College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS)
- Meles Zenawi (under construction)
