Jinka University

Background

Jinka University (JKU) was established on October 23, 2015, in the South Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR), Ethiopia. It is located 750 km from Addis Ababa and is one of 11 universities built during the Second Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP II).

About Jinka

1. Location: Situated in a culturally diverse area, home to over 16 ethnic groups, and near the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Lower Omo Valley.
2. Development Potential: The region is becoming a development corridor with major projects like the Omo-Kuraz Sugar Development Project and Gibe III Hydroelectric Project.
3. Vision: JKU aims to utilize local opportunities for excellence in education and research, addressing regional and national needs.
4. Governance Structure: Includes a Board, President, University Senate, and various councils and committees.
5. Organizational Structure: Comprises five major offices accountable to the President, overseeing various directorates.
