History & About Hawassa University

Hawassa University (HU) is one of Ethiopia's first-generation universities, initially established as Awassa College of Agriculture (ACA) in 1976. The college began with the admission of 217 students. In 2000, it was restructured and promoted to university status, named "Debub University," following the merger of ACA with two other institutions: Wondogenet College of Forestry and Natural Resources, founded in 1978, and Dilla College of Teachers’ Education and Health Sciences, established in 1996. In 2006, the institution was renamed Hawassa University, and Dilla College became a separate university.

Timeline:

  • 1976: Establishment of Awassa College of Agriculture (ACA) with 217 students.

College of Medicine and Health Sciences Overview

The College of Medicine and Health Sciences was established in 1996 G.C. as the Health Science Faculty at the former Dilla College of Teacher Education and Health Sciences (DCTEHS) in Dilla. In 2003 G.C., it moved to Hawassa with the existing infrastructure, and by then, the college comprised two faculties: Medical and Health Science. The college offers a wide range of training in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Currently, the college has a highly qualified staff of 435 academic, 1,026 administrative, and 717 health professionals to cater to 2,729 students.
