History

The history of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) dates back to the establishment of the State Bank of Ethiopia in 1942 under reigm Emperor Haile selassie, following Ethiopia's victory over Italy in World War II. Initially, it was named the State Bank of Ethiopia (SBE).

In 1943

SBE commenced operations on April 15, 1943, with just two branches and a staff of 43 and was empowered to issue currency and manage the country's monetary policy and serve as Ethiopia's central bank, with the power to issue banknotes and coins.

In 1945

In 1945, the Ethiopian government granted SBE the exclusive right to issue currency, marking a significant step in establishing a national financial identity.

In 1963

CBE became legally established as a share company in 1963, following the division of the State Bank of Ethiopia into the National Bank of Ethiopia (the country's central bank) and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) by the Ethiopian government.
