Online vs Paper-Based Exam Performance

Out of the total 585,882 examinees, 134,609 students (23%) sat for the exam online. Among them, 29,239 students passed, resulting in a 21.7% pass rate. This is a significantly higher success rate than those who took the paper-based exam, proving that online examinees performed better in 2025.

Exam Results by School Type

Performance in the 2017 EC Grade 12 exams varied greatly by type of school:

  • Government Schools: Only 5.7% of students passed
  • Private Schools: 51% of students passed
  • International Schools: Achieved the best results, with 86% of students passing
  • Special Boarding Government Schools: Recorded a strong performance, with 70% of students passing

This breakdown highlights a wide gap between government schools and private/international institutions.

Regional Performance Highlights

Addis Ababa: 14,623 students passed (highest in the country)

Oromia: 11,651 students passed

Gambella: strongest improvement, rising from 1.7% pass rate last year to 4.5% this year, showing a 2.8% increase
